Tong Chen is a Lecturer in Chinese, teaching from introductory through advanced levels in the Regular language track. He has taught at MIT for 28 years. Chen also led instruction of Chinese in Middlebury Languages School summer program for 25 summers and served as President of the New England Chinese Language Teachers Association and the board director of Chinese Teachers Association, USA.

He is the author of multiple textbooks and grammar books for Chinese language learners, and Chinese learners of English. Most recently, his publications include the Teaching Basic Chinese Grammar, Snapshots Volume 1 and Volume 2, Digital Chinese.

Tong Chen’s pedagogical foci include multimedia in Chinese language education, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, curriculum design, and teachers training. He was an early adopter of Skype and the messaging application QQ to foster intercultural and cross-linguistic exchange between MIT and Chinese university students.
